Fruition Artist Statement by Deanna Musgrave:" In August 2019 I had finished an apocalypse painting “Transcendence” which is scheduled for debut at the Beaverbrook Art Gallery July 22th – October 24th 2022. I knew I had a year to build a body of work for Spicer Merrifield Gallery that would complement that show and exhibit around the same time. I asked my intuition the question “What will people need in August 2022 to assist with healing from the apocalypse?” The answer was endless images of strawberries coming out of cosmic clouds full of rainbows. I don’t know the significance of the strawberry. I wonder if we will discover something important about them or that we will need to grow them because of food supply issues? I also have been contemplating that it could be about what these berries symbolize. It could simply be a message to enjoy the “sweetness of life.” I’m hoping that a viewer can receive a message from the strawberries in the paintings and relay it to me. In addition, my practice has grown to include activating channeled symbols and I received one for “strawberry” which appears in some of the paintings. My overall body of work seeks to create spaces for messages to be received from the unseen. What is unseen to human perception could be music, energy, the unconscious mind, an aspect of the metaphysical or something else. It has been my observation that the message changes for each viewer. It is my intention to create paintings that channel energy to activate, transform, and bring balance and serenity. Water is another important element in all my work which shows up as rainclouds in this set of paintings. All my paintings start with a process I call “Watermarking” whereby I use objects gifted to me by laying them on the canvas and using pigment and water to create the underpainting. I see this process as a form of alchemy to transmute energy through painting. Of this process, Donna Wawzonek writes: “Using water in the process is as important to Deanna as her subject matter. Her worldview is closely tied to the power of water and its relationship to experience and memory. Deanna’s work considers and articulates the theories of homeopathy: the ability of water to remember substances once mixed in it; cymatics: the patterns formed when a substance like water or sand is vibrated; and akashic field theory: the theory that information can exist and be transmitted through energy fields. The result is a highly dynamic and fluid expression of memory, story, and a deep connection to water.” Outside of being an artist, I assist my community through hypnotherapy, energy work (Reiki, Akashic Field Therapy ™) and intuitive guidance.
