DOROTHÉE ROSEN / HALIFAX, NS
Dorothée was born in Germany and immigrated to Canada in 1989 at the age of 19. In 2005, she graduated from NSCAD University with a major in jewellery design and metalsmithing, and a minor in art history (focus craft). Recipient of various awards and scholarships, Dorothée showed outstanding achievements in her studies at NSCAD, and continues to participate in exhibitions in Canada and the US. Dorothée creates in her studio in Halifax.
Much of Dorothée’s inspiration comes from nature and often work from her own photographs. She is passionate about the materials of her trade and the intrinsic beauty and qualities they possess. With an image or the written word, Dorothée begins directly with the material and looks to make discoveries by working through hundreds of samples. Her design process is therefore material driven; designing through material rather than for it. Intrigued by the story the metal has to tell, she keeps her mind open to serendipity while designing new work.
When creating, Dorothée believes that she must arrive at a new design through a series of discoveries or it will only be a repetition of what’s already done. By thoroughly investigating and exploring design, she creates truly unique body adornments of timeless elegance which encompass stories and start conversations. Dorothée strives to bring elegance and joy into the world as she believes elegance lifts the human mind and spirit.
