COLIN SMITH / FLORENCEVILLE, NB
For Colin Smith, drawing is a way of seeing. He often creates drawings of birds. Sometimes the birds are in nature while other times they are the Wings of Time or the Broken Heart of a Poet. Colin preserves his thoughts in sketchbooks that are filled with phrases, doodles and ideas of what he sees around him. He usually begins working from pencil sketches and then continues in pen and ink. The combination encourages a mix of fluidity and improvisation. Many of his tonal squiggles have come from old engravings where shading and tone are built up where ink and the wash work together to create a strange volume.
